Abstract

Amyotrophiclateralsclerosis(ALS)isaneurodegenerativedisorder.WorseprognosticfactorsinALSare:(a)advancedage,(b)bulbaronset,and(c)shorttimebetweenonsetanddiagnosis.Progesterone(PROG)hasbeenassociatedwithneuroprotectiveandpromyelinatingactivitiesininjury,ischemiaanddegenerationofthecentralandperipheralnervoussystem.Cortisolisconnectedtotheresponsetostresssituationsandcouldcontributetoneuronaldamage.Thegoalsofthisstudywere:(i)toinvestigatewhetherPROGlevelsaremodifiedbyALSprognosticfactorsand(ii)todeterminewhethercortisolfollowsthesamepattern.Wedeterminedserumsteroidlevelsin27patientswithsporadicALS(sALS)and21controls.BothsteroidhormonesshowedsignificantlyincreasedlevelsinALSpatientsversuscontrols(mean±SEM:PROGALSvs.
